Eating Disorders - January 8th 2010. Leeds

Event location: Prout Conference Centre, St Gemma’s Hospice,

Date: 8th Jan 2010

Event time: 12:00 to 16:30

Eating disorders are common and carry the highest mortality of any psychiatric condition. NICE guidelines require treatment of mild cases in primary care, including guided self-help, and moderate cases in secondary care, including risk management, with only the 'tip of the iceberg'  referred to specialist services.  Yet clinicians vary in confidence and ability and access to specialist services is lacking for 50% of the UK.

This workshop looks at how to identify people who have eating disorders and how to clinically manage them in primary and secondary care. This includes outlining a simple management strategy, and which patients to refer urgently based on clinical risk.  The workshop also aims to raise attendees awareness of the challenges in managing common co-morbidities and highlights cryptic presentations.

After the seminar, attendees will:

  • Have simple ground rules for identification and early treatment of common eating disorders
  • Understand the importance of early intervention, including primary prevention and guided self-help
  • Appreciate the need for risk management and the associated ethical dilemmas.
